A. Gen. 1:1 “In the beginning GOD CREATED… the EARTH [eretz].
V.2 Now the earth [matter] was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep,…waters” NOTE: the importance of water, the medium for this matter.

II. LESSON
INTRODUCTION: We have established:
1. That our God, Elohim, is a Godhead, which means He exists in three distinct Personalities, all of whom were active in the Creation week.
2. Our Eternal God started the clock of time for HIS cosmos.
3. Then He created Space [heaven] as a place to put HIS cosmos
A. Now Elohim creates Matter [eretz-earth] “that which occupies space” (Webster) . In v. 2, He explains the condition of that Matter: [ELEMENTS]
1) Formless [tohoo]Jer 4:23 The matter [ELEMENTS] or ‘building materials’ at this point was without any recognizable form or shape, for it had not been made into anything
2) Empty [bohoo] = undistinguishable [Is. 34:11 useless plumb line] Isaiah is suggesting there was nothing for which to use a builder’s plumb line. At this point, the building supplies were but stockpiled on the Property = space.
3) Next we note that there was darkness [choshek] = absence of light. We know that space is dark even today. Light will need a source, not made.
4) Finally, He tells us that the matter [ELEMENTS] are in water [deep = tehom – ‘primeval ocean’]. WATER is an amazing substance. H2O is the chemical formula. Hebrew: mayim = always in ‘dual’ format. [See 6)]
- Recent discovery suggests that there is a gigantic cloud of water vapor, near a quasar, 12 billion light years from earth. It contains far more water than the earth’s oceans. Not so strange when it is understood that hydrogen and oxygen are among the most abundant elements in the universe. [NOTE 1: Evolutionists consider this is source of E’s water.]
[NOTE 2: Evolutionists believe Abiogenesis {life} originated in a “gigantic outdoor chemical laboratory’ a “prebiotic ocean” as fish, during the Hadean Epoch. This is called ‘ Chemical Evolution].
- One other observation: The discovery of Hydrous Ringwoodite located in between the upper and lower Earth’s Mantle in the Transition Zone, about 400 miles deep is suggested to contain far more water than in the earth’s oceans, locked in the Ringwoodite’s nuclear structure.
5) The form of that water is not mentioned here; however look at Isaiah 40:22 where he says: God “sits enthroned above the ‘circle of the earth…’” The Hebrew word is [chagu – which comes from a root meaning ‘sphere’.
6) God’s choice of water [mayim] for HIS MATRIX at this time reveals some wonderful characteristics of water: [Even term for water is in dual state [plural] = indicating it’s Divine Complex Nature.
a) Only substance which exists naturally in all three states: liquid, solid and gas.
b) Dissolves more substances in greater quantity than any other common fluid… the “universal solvent”. [Thus, elements in water can form compounds to form the earth and everything else]
c) Has high surface tension… we will see this importance later.
d) 97% of earth’s water is salty
e) Water is composed of Hydrogen [H] & Oxygen [O]
i. H. is the basic element # 1 in the Periodic Table, because it is the simplest of the Atomic structures = 1 proton in the Atom’s NUCLEUS.
-H is the most prevalent chemical substance in the U. = 72% of the substance of the cosmos.
-H. is the main constituent of stars and inter-stellar medium.
-By fusion in stars, Helium [Atomic #2, He], is formed which is the second most prevalent element in U. at 24%
-Hydrogen Bond = special force which God designed in the Hydrogen atom to bond with other atoms such as O to make water in all three states and makes possible the DNA helix with its nucleic acids & proteins as well as polymers such as nylon.
ii. O. is # 8 in the PT, and third most prevalent element in U. Most of the earth’s crust is made up of Oxides which form when Oxygen & a second element compound.
B. By means of this creative act, we see God’s INFINITE ABILITY to stockpile all that HIS SON will need to proceed with in the Days of Creation. Even the medium in which the building blocks are stockpiled is relevant, for the primary building materials in the water, are the same materials needed for the U. God designed water [H20] as best solvent. He created Carbon [C] the basic building block of living things and Silicon [Si] as basic building block of non living things = basic part of 2000 minerals. Both [c & Si] combine easily with other elements to form everything from cheap bldg materials to precious gems.
-Ex Nihilo. Hebrews 11:3 “By faith we understand that the U. was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. There was no matter/elements [earth] from which to draw.
C. NOW, let us seek to understand the condition of the building materials which exist in the ‘primeval ocean’. The generic term matter, “that which occupies space” can be understood to be the 118 CHEMICAL ‘ELEMENTS’ of the ‘periodic table’ [PT]. Known as the “fundamental building blocks of U. NOTE: 92 elements are ‘Natural’, the rest are man-made or artificial. Metals are listed to the Left and non-metals to the Right. Interestingly, Carbon [C] is the standard for all elements in the 18 groups & 7 rows or periods.

1) Matter is made up of Atoms. The PT is designed such that each element is assigned a letter and a number which indicates the number of Protons in its nucleus. The simplest Element is Hydrogen, which occupies the top left corner of the PT. We note that its letter is ‘H’ and has # 1 over it. This indicates that the number of protons in the Atom is 1. In studying the PT, it is found that each element is in sequence, as the # of Protons increases. The final element isotope listed in PT is OGANESSON-118. This means there are 118 Protons in its nucleus. [Only 3 such atoms have been isolated, but it still has not been confirmed!]
a) Each Atom is unique to its Element. Unique in the number of Protons, Neutrons and Electrons in its Atomic Structure,
b) This determines the Element’s: Properties and Behavior
c) Each Atom can combine with others to form multiple compounds and chemical substances for creating the U. & procreation of all living. NOTE: the possible compounds is limited to the ‘boundaries of their structure’ as God designed them.
d) The Atom’s structure is phenomenal in more than one way. Its size is so small; it can only be seen by an Atomic Force Microscope. The Atom is only 62 pm in diameter = 10-12 of a meter.
e) The Atom is designed in minute detail for accuracy. For instance, the Gold atom has 79 Protons + 118 Neutrons in its nucleus + 79 electrons in 6 shells: 2, 8, 18, 32, 18, 1, all roaming about in their respective shells, without running into each other! Talk about design.
2) Scientists in the 21st C. have postulated numerous ‘kinds of matter’ including “Strange Matter”, among others, but ‘ordinary matter’ is what we recognize in the visible U. BUT… ‘Ordinary’ matter only makes up 5% U?
3) All Atoms, which make up matter, are no longer understood to be ‘uncuttable’ [G = a-tomas] or the smallest particles or building blocks of nature. Scientists have discovered 70 Particles and are still looking for other postulated ELEMENTARY PARTICLES: i.e., leptons, quarks, gauge bosons, + the elusive Higgs Boson {which they think they have observed at the CERN LARGE HADRON COLLIDER [LCH], Cern, Switzerland} in March 2013, after 40 yrs search!

4) That being said, at this point, we have all the building blocks or elements [even those yet to be discovered], either in suspension or solution in the ‘primordial ocean’. They are in readiness for God the Son-BUILDER to proceed. Next we will see how the Architect’s Plans will be followed by HIS SON. Then will appear the recognizable [versus tohoo and bohoo {GEN 1:2}] formations with which we are currently familiar.
5) The capstone use of the ‘Non-metal elements’ in the PT [colored: green, yellow & blue in top right corner] are six elements necessary for all life. These 6 are therefore, called: ‘biogens’. They are: Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphorus & Sulfur = CHONPS. They are the main ingredients in DNA/RNA. These compounds carry the genetic code which is the ‘blueprint of life’, whereby living things are able to reproduce themselves. NOTE: It is God Himself who wills “breath” into these life forms the “breath of life”, because elements cannot produce ‘life’. Gen2:7.
6) It is also interesting to note that these same non-metals are found in the lion’s share [64%] of all 8,427,300 chemical compounds. [Very important]
D. Men of Science routinely use the term ‘matter’
to describe what they are discovering in their research. Matter is essentially

The world in which we live, including our bodies, are constructed of Atoms which they call “ordinary matter” which we recognize exists in ‘solid, liquid or gas’ states. Now due to Quantum Physics, scientists speak of matter which exhibits “Wave-particle Duality” and add another state of matter as ‘Plasma’. NOTE: "matter" is used throughout physics in a bewildering variety of contexts: for example, one refers to "condensed matter physics",] "elementary matter",] "partonic" matter, "dark" matter, "anti"-matter, "strange" matter, and "nuclear" matter”. [Scientists still struggle with how to define matter as discovery evolves.]
For us, the simple definition of Matter is: Matter is made up of Leptons = [electrons] + Quarks [Protons & Neutrons found in the nucleus of the Atom. The atom can form Molecules and chemical compounds. These are the building blocks of our Universe. Evolutionists proceed by Faith as we now see…
Where did all this matter/elements come from? The Evolutionist by Faith says 14.8 billion years ago, there was a Big Bang caused by a Singularity of infinite density and infinite time which produced an initial expansion accompanied by infinite heat. As the Universe cooled BB nucleosynthesis produced atomic nuclei and subatomic particles from preexistent nucleons as well as H + He. During the Structural Epoch, gravity caused the clouds to form celestial objects which caused Stellar Nucleosynthesis to form the elements up to Fe due to nuclear fusion, converting H into He. Super Nova Nucleosynthesis formed heavier Primary elements. Cosmic Ray Spallation through nuclear fission produced the chemical elements & light elements. ORIGIN OF ELEMENTS TABLE
1) .They suggest there must be ‘ante-baryonic matter’ in contrast to the baryonic matter, although they can’t seem to find it. Reason being, they are predicted to cancel out each other! Such U. would self destruct.
2). Dark Matter is another hypothesis about Deep Space. It seems that there is some mysterious or gravitational force in galactic space interacting with galaxies for which they cannot find an explanation; therefore, Cold Dark Matter is the suggestion. However, latest research seems to deny the idea. So, back to the drawing board, for God has already been ruled out.
3). Years and thousands of dollars have been spent on searching for an elusive Higgs Boson, the so-called ‘god particle’. It is thought that this Particle somehow controls all the other particles or holds them together. Problem is, it exists for only an instant, but traces of it seem to show up in the computer analysis. They are elated…but, the ‘GOD?’ Particle??
4). But the greatest conundrum of all is to find a cogent explanation of GRAVITY. Neither Newton’s nor Einstein’s theories, have been able to successfully explain Gravity. Even the ‘string theory’ of particle behavior has not solved the unsolvable. We will see this subject again.
5). The U. contains 10 to 80 atoms = 10 with 80 zeros.
6). “The origin of water on Earth, or the reason that there is clearly more liquid water on the Earth than on the other rocky planets of the Solar System, is not completely understood. They recognize: “A sizeable quantity of water would have been in the material which formed the Earth.”” [Wikipedia] {Amazing thought!}. Scientists speculate that water on earth must have come here from Hyperactive Comets crashing into it or asteroids.[www.space.com] It is clearly understood that one of the things which make earth inhabitable is its oceans which cover 70% of its surface. Another is its breathable atmosphere.
E. Thus, we conclude. Our Biblical Cosmology or Worldview still is the most believable explanation of the genesis of our cosmos, which does justice to the observable data, even in the light of absolutely phenomenal research by means of exploding information via outstanding technology. Facts are facts, but interpretation of those facts depends on one’s Worldview. DESIGN is still the BEST and ONLY answer as magnificently displayed in the little ol’ Atom which is basic to the ELEMENTS/ MATTER, which God herein created. This is called the “Particulate Theory of Matter = which means, the Atom is made up of building blocks called ‘fermions’ which are ‘quarks & leptons’] Although they will not admit it, scientists are bound by Evolutionary FAITH also, for they cannot SCIENTIFICALLY show any proof for their conclusions…it is a Faith venture for us & them, even though they deny it and still adamantly declare their answer is SCIENCE!
One final observation involves the subject of MATERIALISM. There are those who want to believe that all that exists is Matter. Nature is everything. The Atheist’s Mantra is: the cosmos is all that is, has been or ever will be. The Agnostic is one who just is not sure, but doesn’t want to believe in God, but still wants to hedge his bets. What a sad state of uncertainty.
For us it is, “In the beginning GOD”… by Faith
For them it is “In the beginning NATURAL LAWS made it all happen… by Faith
The amazing thing is… we believe GOD MADE THE NATURAL LAWS also… [perhaps as many as 276 different kinds] by Faith. The Lord calls them “fixed laws-NIV” or “ordinances-KJV” of heaven & earth [Jeremiah 33:25]. The Psalmist uses the word “decree…for ever & ever” [Psalm 148:6].
Addendum. I keep reading about new discoveries about the ‘strange’ behavior of subatomic particles of the Atom. Researchers are desperately searching for an explanation for why the Universe even exists. After the BB, matter and antimatter should have existed in equal parts. In the ensuing battle, they should have annihilated themselves, ‘ according to their Model’? But the outcome of that ‘battle’, obviously was Matter won! Why? The answer now proposed is: “Unique Neutrinos”. They are the “Ghosts of the subatomic world”. [Some 650 trillion hit us every second, coming from the Sun or nuclear reactions]. Neutrinos are said to exist in three KINDS: electron, muon & tau neutrinos which can change their identity by oscillation. They somehow “spun” their way [Neutrinos have ‘spin’, right or left] into the equation and the U. exists, making it possible for us to live on planet earth. [Suggested by non-other than a PhD at Notre Dame]. Amazing, a PhD no less.
[I note that the U. exists because God Created it. Science is looking backward from the finished product to discover how it all came together ‘scientifically’ by Natural Law… trying to do it without God of course who made the NLs discoverable.]
Since science has ruled creation of the earth did not need God, they have determined that it must have been from the crashing of numerous ‘planetesimals’. These of course, must have come from the accretion of material from the BB.
The evolutionists in Quantum Mechanics are still adamant that matter is a magnetic “field” which is directed by the Higgs field which gives mass to the subatomic particles as they pass through it as everywhere present. The Ivy League universities are quite certain. They can have there dreams which so far are but a nightmare.
