1 CORINTHIANS 10 - RESPONSIBILITY OF the BELIEVER CONTINUED
1.V.1 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact Brothers [Law of being aware of history]
A. Our Forefathers were all under the cloud [guided them by day –Ex 13:21]
B. They all passed through the sea
C.V.2 They were all baptized into Moses
1. In the Cloud
2. In the Sea
D.V.3 They all ate the same Spiritual Food [Ex 16 Manna] [but wanted leeks of Egypt Ex 11:4]
E. They drank the same Spiritual Drink
1. For they drank from Spiritual Rock [Ex 17 & Nu 20]
a. That accompanied them
b. That Rock was Christ
F.V.5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them [Law of Keeping Short Accounts With God]
1. Their bodies were scattered over the desert
2.V.6 Now these things occurred as examples:
A. To keep us from setting our hearts on evil things [Law of keeping one’s heart in check]
1. As they did
B.V.7 Do not be idolaters [Golden Calf Ex 32] [Law God’s Jealousy]
1. As some of them were
2. As it is written
a. They sat down to eat and drink
b. They got up to indulge in pagan revelry
C.V.8 We should not commit sexual immorality [Law of Sexual Purity]
1. As some of them did [Nu 25 with Moabite women]
2.And in one day 23,000 of them died [Nu 25:9]
D.V.9 We should not Test the Lord [Law of Not Trying to Deceive God]
1. As some of them did
2. And were killed by snakes [Nu 21:6]
E.V.10 And do not grumble [Nu16:41-] [Law of Curbing the tongue]
1. As some of them did
2. And were killed by the destroying angel
3.V.11 These things happened to them as examples
A. Were written down as warnings for us [Law that God loves us]
1. On whom the fulfillment of the ages has come
B.V.12 So if you think you are standing firm [Law or Pride goes before a fall}
1. Be careful that you do not fall
2.V.13 No temptation has seized you
a. Except that what is common to man
b. And God is faithful, [Law of God’s Faithfullness]
1. He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear
2. But when you are tempted
a. He will also provide a way out
b. So that you can stand up under it
4.V.14 Therefore, my dear Friends [V.1 Brothers]
A Flee from Idolatry [Different idols in 21st C., but just as demanding]
1. I speak to sensible people
a. Judge for yourselves what I say
b. Is not the cup of THANKSGIVING [Communion Table]
1. For which we give thanks
2. A participation in the Blood of Christ?
c. And is not the Bread that we break
1. A participation in Body of Christ?
d.V.17 Because there is one loaf [breaking of bread from one loaf symbolic]
1. We, who are many,
a. We are one body [law of Christian brotherhood]
b. For we all partake of the one loaf
2.V.18 Consider the people of Israel: [law of learning from those with experience]
a. Do not those who eat the sacrifices
1. Participate in the Altar?
b.V.19 Do I mean then
1. That a sacrifice offered to an idol is anything? [Law idols are nothing]
2. Or that an idol is anything?
c.V.20 No, but the sacrifices of Pagans [Law of idol worship = Demonism]
1. Are offered to Demons
2. Not to God
d. And I do not want you to be participants with Demons
1V.21. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord
2. And the cup of Demons too
3. You cannot have a part in both
a. The Lord’s Table
b. The table of Demons
e.V.22 Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy? [see V.5]
1. Are we stronger than He?
5.V.23 Everything is permissible
A. But not everything is beneficial
6. Everything is permissible
A. But not everything is constructive
7.V.24 Nobody should seek his own good,
A. But the good of others
8.V.25 Eat anything sold in the meat market [remember eating in temple
A. Without raising questions of conscience
1. The Earth is the Lord’s and everything in it [Peter had to learn this]
9.27 If some unbeliever invites you to a meal
A. And you want to go
B. Eat whatever is put before you
1. Without raising questions of conscience
10.V.28 But if anyone says to you
A. This has been offered in sacrifice
1. Then do not eat it
a. Both for the sake of the man who told you
b. And for [his] Conscience sake
c.29 The other man’s conscience I mean
1. Not yours
2. For why should my freedom be judged by another’s conscience?
3.V. 30 If I take part in the meal in thankfulness
a. Why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?
11.V.31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do
A. Do it all for the glory of God
B.V32 Do not cause to stumble, [Law of I am my brother’s keeper Gen 4:9 Cain]
1.Jew, Greeks, or the Church of God
12.V.33 Even as I try to please everybody in every way
C. For I am not seeking my own good
1. But the good of many
2. SO THAT THEY MAY BE SAVED [Law of Great Commission]
